I recently met a wonderful women who also lives in chronic pain, and like me has developed was through the conspumtion of cannabis that was completely fascinating. While Yes, I and the professional believe that cannabis in raw form will give you a higher cdb's to help relieve some of your medical issues. So the theory is to not dry it, cook it, or decarboxilate the cannabis, changing its molecular structure. So yes, even just drying your cannabis can increase the THC and levels very little CBDs.
So when I recently met another cannabis patient who is into raw, and other natural ways to consume cannabis. She handed me a jar of dehydrated cannabis leaves which she flavored in hoisin sauce, for extra flavor. I was amazed that it not only tasted good ( same texture as dried seaweed) but once dehydrated, its crunchy, flavorful and A NEW WAY TO EAT cannabis LEAVES. SHE uses a HIGH CBD strain, so her shade leaves are already helpful even if dry!
so for you healthy folks, vegan and definitely use cannabis for its high cbd benefits, this may be something exciting to try.
HAPPY RAW JUICING AND EATING.!
peace and happy holidaze!

The art of EATING cannabis
The Art of Eating Cannabis
By Avery Runner
Cannabis has been used for food throughout countless generations. Bhang Ki Thandai, also called Shadai, is an example. To prepare, the female buds and cannabis leaves are mixed with almonds, spices, milk and sugar. This is used in many parts of India during the celebrations of Holi and Vaisakhi, dedicated to Lord Shiva.
My first impression of eating the plant was related to pot brownies and hippies, such as the old “Furry Freak Brothers Comix”. Nevertheless, this amazing plant provides good medicine and nourishment. Through the ages, cannabis has been cultivated and refined into many different edible products.
Books are available regarding the preparation of Cannabis edibles. Clarified butter and cooking oils are commonly used for extracting desired cannabinoids from plant matter. A great deal of information is available on the internet, which can be a great resource for the homegrown MMJ patient. If you are a medical user with access to MMJ trim or buds, you may want to try exploring some recipes from your kitchen. Check out the book Marijuana Cooking – Good Medicine Made Easy by Bliss Cameron & Veronica Greene, for several good extraction processes.
Kind buds and hash oils are very expensive to buy, and it requires a great deal of energy to manage a home cannabis garden. Cooking marijuana in a kitchen is not for everyone. Because of this, many patients find it appropriate to purchase Medically Infused Products (MIPs) from established businesses. Many Colorado MIP companies are focused on quality, and design potent products.
This article intends to shed some light on the subject of ‘medibles’. Patients who are using Medical Cannabis to better their lives should be aware of the many benefits that can be derived from this miraculous plant.
One issue of concern when eating marijuana is that it can be unpredictable. The types of foods being digested in your stomach at the time of eating the medicine will effect the onset period of the medicine. An empty stomach will result in strong and rapid absorption. How the product was prepared can tremendously vary the results. Some cooking techniques can produce severe drowsiness. In todays market, analysis testing is available, and many Colorado MIP manufacturers are sharing these results with consumers. This can give patients an idea of what cannabinoid ratios are inside. Spec tests however cannot guarantee the way a product will work on different people.
Among companies doing analysis testing is Cannabis Botanix, now offering “Kalamata Kind” – bud infused olive oil. Study spec tests by searching companies online at www.fullspectrumlabs.com, using the ‘dispensaries’ button, for a wide variety of strains and infused products available in Colorado.
Most MMJ users are familiar with the psychoactive component known as THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). THC generates a euphoric state of consciousness when consumed in its potentiated form. THC-A, the precursor molecule, must be decarboxylated through heating to become psychoactive. Once enough THC has been absorbed into the bloodstream, the mind “softens its focus” away from internal processes such as physical pain, emotional turmoil and disease ailments. This can relax the body and allow some healing to occur.
The psychoactive effect of THC, in small amounts, may also help in re-uptake of serotonin, as indicated by article “Marijuana for depression & bipolar disorder”, viewed online at www.patients4medicalmarijuana.wordpress.com.
“The anti-depressant and intoxicating effects of cannabis are due to its chemical similarity to natural substances in the brain known as “endo-cannabinoids,” which are released under conditions of high stress or pain, explained Dr. Gobbi. They interact with the brain through structures called cannabinoid CB1 receptors. This study demonstrates for the first time that these receptors have a direct effect on the cells producing serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter that regulates the mood.”
One draw back from consuming activated THC is that the side effects can be intense or undesirable. Many users consume relatively small amounts of cannabinoids as a result. Getting “to high” they experience “the spins” or restless discomfort resulting from over use and possible cross effects with other prescription drugs or alcohol. For the medicine to work best, an adequate serum level of cannabinoids in the bloodstream is needed. Some patients may be suffering from a condition which has been referred to as a Cannabinoid Deficiency Disorder, requiring very large doses of the medicine in order to experience desired results, such as healing from disease. This may best be accomplished through consuming non-potentiated forms of the cannabis plant.
THC-A and non-psychoative cannabinoids like CBD, CBN & CBG provide healing benefits. Although the research about medical properties of raw cannabis is limited at this time, there is reason to believe eating fresh leaves and buds off the plant can reverse effects of many diseases. Kristen Peskuski suffered from endometriosis, intersistial cystisis, rheumatoid arthritis and a list of other ailments. She claims that drinking raw cannabis juice saved her life. Dr. William Courtney originally asked Peskuski to consume dried plant material, unheated and crushed into capsules, to provide higher doses of important cannabinoids like CBD & CBN. His idea was to reduce the amount of THC being consumed, and increase other beneficial compounds. An article in High Times / Medical Marijuana edition – winter 2011 reveals an in depth review, and reports as long as Peskuski continues a daily consumption of ganja juice, all of her health problems are maintained pain free and apparent cellular healing occurs. However, it was noted, when she has gone weeks without raw juice, disease symptoms begin to resurface. As a result of Dr. Courtney’s research, Humboldt Patient Resource Center in California recently began a free juicing program for qualified patients who are willing to conduct a trial study regarding the benefits of drinking freshly juiced cannabis leaf and buds.
Another interesting consideration when consuming marijuana has to do with a little understood chemical process involving terpenes, the essential oils that produce unique smells from strain to strain. Some of the terpenes found in cannabis include Myrcene (earthy-mango), Pinene (pine-eucalyptus), Beta-Caryophyllene (pepper), Terpenol (floral-lilac), Borneol (menthol-camphor), Linalool (lavender) and Pulgone (minty). The Medical Marijuana Handbook by Gieringer, Rosenthal and Carter explores this topic. Experienced aromatherapists understand the many medicinal properties of these essential oil bases, which occur naturally in plants all over the planet.
Terpenes, CBD and other cannabinoids affect the way THC is absorbed, for example causing drowsiness or alertness. Some postulate that, like enzymes and amino acids, terpenes break down when heated to high temperatures. The ratio of THC to CBD has been used in chemotype determination of cannabis genetics (see Marijuana Botany : an advanced study by Robert Clark). Although exploration of THC to CBD ratios have the forefront in research, some scientists are studying how the terpene oils affect THC and cannabinoid absorption into the human body when bonding with the CB1 and CB2 receptor sites. Different ‘highs’ result from different strains. This seems an interesting science which must be very complex. It is hard to gauge what effects terpenes may have when eating ganja food. It remains that processing the herb at different temperatures effects the stability of these essential oils.
Bucky Minor from Full Spectrum Labs in Colorado concluded this statement in these regards.
“Cannabinoids have many healing properties to them in both forms (acid and active). You just gain more benefits for most patients when material is activated. You have, preheats methods, temp differences, degrading of molecules, extract then heat, heat while extracting, terpenes, let alone the medium used. Having raw (hash) oil allows you to render it into any medium you want at any time”.
In conclusion, the topic of medibles is a vast pool of knowledge which deserves attention from patients. If you or someone you know can find healing from use of the cannabis plant, eating it is a great option.

Cancer, Children and Cannabis
Posted by Mark Sircus - Director on 02 April 2012 | Filed under Medicine
There has been a lot happening in the world and in my work as of late so I would like to give an update. First of all, for those of you who enjoy following me closely, my daily communications continue on Facebook.
I have not been publishing as many newsletters as usual and one reason is that I have been into my cancer writings. This week The Changing Landscape of Cancer goes into final production and it will serve as a primer for a suite of five books that cover the depth and breadth of my work in oncology.
I am presently working on Breast & Prostate Cancer, which will cover all sexual organ cancers as well as the soft underbelly of cancer in general—the emotional, mental, spiritual and sexual stresses and trauma people go through. For those anxious to read my work in this area, see my Soft Medicine book. It holds much of the material that will see the light of day in this new cancer book.
Then I will come out quickly with a second edition of my Winning the War on Cancer book, which will be more focused and cover everything that my Sodium Bicarbonate, Rich Man’s Poor Man’s Cancer Treatment book, my Medical Marijuana book and these other books do not cover. With five books covering the subject of cancer I will have a totally comprehensive medical approach to the treatment of cancer.
In terms of medical marijuana, the question is being asked, “What more evidence does the U.S. government need to understand that the current approach to fighting the Mexican drug cartels is failing? All the evidence suggests that the efforts to crush Mexico’s violent drug cartels have failed. Why won’t the White House listen?” They don’t listen because they are cruel and psychopathic beings who have sold their souls to the system and everything they receive from it.
It is clear beyond doubt that medical marijuana should be prescribed in large oral dosages (hemp oil or raw cannabis) to everyone with cancer (for those in search of complete cures) and that many of the symptoms and even the stress of this disease can be addressed by smoking, which, yes, means getting high.
Missoula Police Sgt. Travis Welsh said, “Obviously, this man’s intentions are for his child.” The Hydes and the doctors decided to wean the toddler off a cocktail of drugs that included methadone, ketamine and morphine. Their son went through 30 rounds of radiation without one bout of nausea or any pain medication other than medical marijuana, according to his father.
Dr. Allison Dering-Anderson, clinical assistant professor in the college of pharmacy at University of Nebraska does not condone breaking the law even if it’s to save a child’s life from cancer. “It’s not acceptable to break the law,” said Dering-Anderson. “I’m sorry for this child and for this family and for all they’ve gone through, but… our licenses depend upon upholding the law.”
Dering-Anderson said she has deep concerns about children taking medication (medical marijuana) that is not specified by a doctor and without clear oversight of their care. From my perspective doctors are forced to be more interested in their licenses and following the lockstep of a type of medicine that hurts more people than it helps. I am concerned for people who put blind trust in these card-carrying doctors who refuse to look beyond what is mandated by the AMA and the FDA. Oncologists are cornered and have no choice but to put the law ahead of the wellbeing of their patients. It is a sad state of affairs when doctors are forced to abuse their patients because of laws and governmental medical rules that dictate which treatments are legal and which are not. Today, to stand behind the law is to become alien to the truth about how to best care for patients and address their needs. We have cruel laws administered by cruel people and aggressive institutions that have no right to accept responsibility for the health and wellbeing of any human being.
Raw Michelle published about other cases where medical marijuana is the right choice for medical treatment.

3-Year-Old Uses Cannabis
Marijuana is the best medicine for 3-year-old Cash Hyde of Missoula, Montana. The boy’s parents defied doctor’s orders—and Montana law—to get their hands on the medicinal treatment their son needed after he was diagnosed with recurring brain tumors at 22 months old. “I’ve had law enforcement threatening to kick my door down, but I would have done anything to keep Cashy alive,” Mike Hyde, who said he has long been a proponent of the drug, told ABCNews.com.Missoula Police Sgt. Travis Welsh said, “Obviously, this man’s intentions are for his child.” The Hydes and the doctors decided to wean the toddler off a cocktail of drugs that included methadone, ketamine and morphine. At 16, Kristen Peskuski was suffering from joint inflammation and an array of autoimmune conditions which made her organs and other tissues swell, including interstitial cystitis and lupus. She was prescribed over 40 different anti-inflammatory, antibiotic and painkilling medications to combat the symptoms. Still struggling to bring the symptoms under control, Kristen developed steroid toxicity. She was told that the most she could hope for was reduced discomfort, and with luck, she might make it to her 30th birthday. Seeking alternative treatments, she began juicing raw cannabis leaves every day, and within two months, Kristen’s back pain had been eliminated, and she had stopped using any other painkillers.
At two years old, she was diagnosed with terminal brain tumours. Her mother was told that with treatment, Amber had a 10 percentchance of survival. After surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, the tumours were still spreading. Her parents were advised to take their child home, make her comfortable, and prepare for the inevitable. A month later, her parents reported a startling change. The tumours had decreased in size and number. The family had been juicing cannabis leaves and feeding their baby a few ounces of the juice each day.

How to Make Cannabis Whole Plant Resin
Marijuana Phytotherapy: How to Make Cannabis Whole Plant Resin
CANNABIS CULTURE - Learn to extract cannabis resins that could potentially help fight off illnesses like cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.
By Herb the Herbalist, Cannabis Culture - Tuesday, June 12 2012
You have probably heard of the "major cancer epidemic" going on today, where it is estimated that "one in every two men" and "one in every three women" get cancer in their lifetimes. If not, please see 10:30 of this clip from the film The Corporation. This cancer-rate estimate came before the Fukushima nuclear accident that is currently dumping radiation all over the world.
Perhaps you have heard of cannabis's reputation as a tumor-shrinking medicine? Apparently the US Government knew this back in 1974 and kept it secret.
Have you seen the US patents on cannabis? This is just one of thousands.
There are many videos on YouTube regarding cannabis's tumor-shrinking powers and rapid healing properties. Two of the best are What if Cannabis Cured Cancer and Run From The Cure.
But the latest wave of cancer-related cannabis videos involves the juicing of raw cannabis leaves and buds. This method allows a person to consume much greater amounts of the medicinal ingredients in a juice form than they could if they were just eating raw cannabis leaves or buds (which are hard to swallow and digest due to the scratchy texture).
We all have an Endo-Cannabinoid System (ECS) in our bodies. That system regulates our health and well-being.
When a human being reaches mid-life, the inflammatory arm of the immune system takes on characteristics of an autoimmune disorder for which
the Conditionally Essential Cannabinoid Acids (CECAs) provide unique prophylactic and therapeutic relief.
Cannabinoids effect on diabetes, cancer, autoimmune disorders and ischemic conditions qualify them for recognition as Essential Cannabinoid Acids across the entire life span. Cannabis is a uniquely functional food and if used in its natural state daily, provides more than just nutritional benefits. Smoking does help reduce the symptoms of many conditions but in general it does not work on a curative level like oral consumption does.
One of the benefits of juicing raw cannabis is that, if you manage to avoid heating the cannabis, it isn't psychoactive. This proves cannabis is, at heart, a vegetable, and in it's best form a preventative medicine. Try to consume the juice 3-5 times per day (the metaphor is like a deer grazes). The cannabinoids do their job in the body in about 15 minutes, so supplementing your Endo Cannabinoid System (ECS) all day would be the most ideal treatment program for all sorts of illness and is good for people who want to get rid of their tumors as fast as possible.
If you happen to be a cannabis grower or know a cannabis grower who can provide you with raw plant material, the videos LEAF: The Health Benefits of Juicing Raw Cannabis and The Power of Raw Cannabis may be some use to you.
If you don't grow or know any growers and only have access to the dry cannabis buds, try this recipe for a buds-only treatment.
Suggested treatment for someone with cancer is 6 ounces or more. This recipe is for 3 ounces.
The normal dose for most people is 1/2 the size of a single grain of rice, 3-5 times per day. Slowly increase your dose when you become used to the medicine by 1/2 rice-size increments until you are taking about a gram a day. If you start to experience an uncomfortable "high" then dial back on the dose untill you have a comfortable platform to move to the next increase in doseage. The point is to be taking as much of this as your body is able to tolerate. You cannot die of overdose, but you might get paranoid and feel like you're going to die if you take too much. Start small and slowly build your way up to a larger dose.
Watch Herb the Herbalist give a LIVE demonstration of cannabis juicing and resin extracting on Pot TV.

Suggested treatment for someone with cancer is 6 ounces or more. This recipe is for 3 ounces.
- Grind/crush 3 ounces of well-dried top-quality cannabis buds
- Put cannabis in 20 liters of cold water and stir for 15 minutes
- Pour through a strainer or the largest micron size of bubble bag - don't throw out the buds, stems and leaves yet!
- Let mixture settle 15-30 min. The crystal/trichomes/hash/kief will fall down and settle on the bottom
- Pour/Siphon the water into another pot, leaving the kief mixture behind. Once you pour out most of the water (to about 1/2 inch from the bottom) pour out kief mixture and set aside
- Boil down the water you poured out on mid temperature (7) on the stove burner
- Keep an eye on the water as it reduces and scrape and stir in the oils that form around the sides of the pot.
- Repeat the process with another 20 liters of cold water for a second wash.
- Keep boiling it down to a black, sticky substance - slowly reducing the temp as the water evaporates - don't burn it. (As the mixture thickens add it to the final reduction sauce pan)
- Take the second batch of water and boil it down too. (I use a separate sauce pan to do the final lower temp reduction in.)
- Put the left over cannabis in another pot with water and boil it too, several times. Add the water to the final reduction pan when it becomes thick like a milky tea.
- Now add the kief mixture you had set aside to the black, sticky pot-water reductions, slowly bringing the temperature down. As the water evaporates take it off the heat and put it back on, that helps to not to burn the resin. The end result is something that looks like very sticky black hash.

Start small and slowly build your way up to a larger dose.

learn the new benefits of raw cannabis leaves
(NaturalNews) Contrary to popular belief, the marijuana plant is a whole lot more than just a psychoactive drug that "stoners" use to get high. In raw form, marijuana leaves and buds are actually loaded with a non-psychoactive, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer nutrient compound known as cannabidiol (CBD) that is proving to be a miracle "superfood" capable of preventing and reversing a host of chronic illnesses.
Though you may not have heard much about it, the CBD found in the marijuana plant -- marijuana is technically just a vegetable, by the way -- is a highly medicinal substance with unique immune-regulating capabilities. Since the human body already contains a built-in endogenous cannabinoid system, complete with cannabinoid receptors, inputting CBD from marijuana can help normalize the body's functional systems, including cell communication and proper immune function.
The way CBDs work is that they bridge the gap of neurotransmission in the central nervous system, including in the brain, by providing a two-way system of communication that completes a positive "feedback loop," according to Dr. William Courtney, a medical marijuana expert and founder of Cannabis International. As opposed to a one-way transmission, which can promote chronic inflammation of healthy tissue, the unique two-way transmission system engaged by marijuana CBDs mimics the body's own natural two-way communications system.
So individuals whose systems are compromised by autoimmune disorders, cellular dysfunction, chronic inflammation, cancer cells, and various other illnesses can derive a wide range of health-promoting benefits simply by consuming CBDs. And one of the best ways to obtain CBDs is to juice raw marijuana leaves and buds, according to Dr. Courtney, who currently runs a clinic in Luxembourg that provides raw cannabis medicinal services to patients in need.
"CBD works on receptors, and as it turns out, we have cannabinoids in our bodies, endogenous cannabinoids, that turn out to be very effective at regulating immune functions, nerve functions, bone functions," says Dr. Ethan Russo, a Seattle, Wash.-area physician who is also a senior advisor to GW Pharmaceuticals, a British drug company that is utilizing CBDs in a new marijuana mouth spray known as Sativex.
"There's a tendency to discount claims when something appears to be good for everything, but there's a reason this is the case. The endogenous cannabinoid system acts as a modulator in fine-tuning a lot of these systems, and if something is deranged biochemically in a person's body, it may well be that a cannabinoid system can bring things back into balance."

As long as marijuana remains a Schedule 1 drug with 'no currently accepted medical use,' most Americans will never realize its benefits
While some U.S. states like California and Colorado are beginning to recognize and accept that marijuana has legitimate therapeutic value, the federal government continues to classify marijuana as a Schedule 1 drug with "no currently accepted medical use." And as long as it remains classified in this way, most Americans will never have the opportunity to experience the healing potential of this vital superfood. But Cannabis International and other groups are continuing to educate the public about why marijuana is a food essential, and how legalizing it could change the world. THE WORLD AND GREEN LEAVES????
So one of the benefits to being the blogger for this site, is that I get to read the stat's for how the blog is doing and who and where people are reading it from. So as these months have gone by and we have had almost 2000 people read articles from my blog is AWESOME TO ME!
But as I was thinking about it... and since this little hawaiian born girl hasn't been to many other countries, I am not sure what kind of access do you all have in your countries?
Do you have access to fresh green raw cannabis leaves?
Are you able to grow your own medicine?
I just am very curious to find out how much access people in other countries have to GREEN LEAF?
I am sure there are under ground growers, and maybe to my surprise open cannabis growers world wide?
If you do grow.... PLEASE SHARE, OFFER YOUR TRASH (our medicine the leaves) to people who can use the benefits of raw cannabis juice.
And If you are a patient wanting to start juicing regularly, please watch the below articles with videos on how to have a one light auto-flower garden indoors. This is a set-up designed for a juicing program.
If you are blessed to live in a pro-cannabis country, and suffer from pain, inflammation, chronic disease, please think about giving raw cannabis juice a try.
And pray with me that one day..... we can buy it at the store!
or better yet, walk up to a fresh cannabis juice bar and get a double shot of cannajuice PLEASE!

To be Honest!
Hell everyone!
I took some time today and noticed to my surprise that over 1500 people to date have read articles from this blog.
People have been asking me how is the raw cannabis juice program going and how am I doing.
THE HONEST TRUTH!!!
I have NOT juiced in a while now, maybe once or twice. and the crazy and stupid thing is that I know and believe with all my heart that raw cannabis juice is one of the best anti inflamatorants on this planet!
So why stop?
Honestly because I been so sick or busy playing catch up on my life, that I haven't made the time.
So what do I notice since off the program.
I truely notice all the inflammation is back in my body. And when I was on the 40 day challenge of juicing that I didn;t hurt so much.
I also notice that I have a decrease in my energy level.
so YES! it sound crazy that I stopped when I know it works.
and I will be getting back on the wagon tomorrow, now that I'm feeling alittle better.
If you suffer from fatigue, chronic pain, inflammation anywhere in your body, I wish you would give raw cannabis juicing a try. What is the worse that will happen? it won't work? If your like me.... Most prescibed medications didn't work, or the side affects are so bad that you can't stand it. Please give raw cannabis juice a try!
So lately people have said "Hey I don't have a juicer can I just eat it?
YES! You can chop it up in a salad, or capsule the raw material up. I even know people who believe eating a raw cannabis bud a day... is the key to good health!
So eat away, if you can!
And for those people who want to try... You can juice the leave and freeze it. Yes, some people say you can loose some of the cbd's. But I believe it's better than nothing!
I can also keep fresh leaves and buds in my fridge in a zip lock bag for about 5 days.
YES! like all other fresh veggi's, freshly picked is the best.
But on the negative side, time consuming!
Happy Juicing!
~peace!

OUTDOOR GARDEN, THE PERFECT TIME TO START!
If you have considered starting a raw cannabis juicing program, the Outdoor garden season is the best time to start. You have months and months of access to fresh leaves, and even if you don't grow. If you know someone who has an outdoor garden they should be more than willing to share.
People have been asking me what do you do when you have no leaves.
SUFFER!
Seriously, I have found I suffer when I'm not sticking to my juicing diet.
Being off the cannabis juice for a while is when I can tell how good it is for me.
I have done some extra reading, on storing the raw material.
As mentioned in earlier articles, you can keep the juice for up to two days.
The longer you keep it the lower the potency though. I have also read people are taking fresh cannabis juice putting it in ice trays and freezing it for later use. This seems to be the BEST way to store the juice over a long period. However, I personallyy can taste the difference in the freshness in using fresh leaves. The fresher the better, and I can feel the Benefits of the CBD's when its fresh.
A women asked me the other day if she could eat it? She didn't have a juicer and she couldn't afford one. So I said sure try eating it.. She puts it in her salads, and then she discovered if she soaked it for 5-10 minutes mashed it in a blender or even with her fingers, she can swallow alittle ball of it, or capsule it up too.
I read that you can steam the leaves like spinach, but remember once you Heat the cannabis leaves you change the molecular structure and it looses valuable CBD's!
Well it's July and HOT here in CALIFORNIA AND the 2012 outdoor garden season is ON!
Save those fresh leaves, share them with friends!
Please Help me spread the word about the miracle benefits of juicing or eating raw cannabis daily!
AND READERS,
if You have questions I am more than Open to answering them or am willing to try and find out the answers I don't know.

Juicing rare and unavailable strains of cannabis shown to benefit health
Juicing rare and unavailable strains of cannabis shown to benefit health

William Courtney, MD, offered the chair to the right of the desk, the one occupied during regular office hours by a steady stream of patients seeking a doctor's recommendation for marijuana. In California, such a recommendation means an adult may grow, buy and smoke marijuana, all while remaining safely within the confines of state law.
The singular peculiarity of Courtney's "pot doc" practice here in Northern California is what he recommends: Don't smoke the stuff, he tells patients. Eat it.
Marijuana, he avers to every person who appears before him, turns out to be brimming with healing compounds. It won't get you high eaten raw, but juiced with a handful of carrots to cut the bitter taste, its leaves and buds may well have restored the health of his girlfriend, who had been given a diagnosis of lupus and a butcher's bill of other disorders that lab tests show have subsided. A local sufferer of Crohn's disease credits the plant with helping reverse the debilitating intestinal disorder. And published research from accredited laboratories suggests promise in preventing diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer's, cancers and assorted maladies arising from chronic inflammation.
Yet almost no one knows any of this beyond a handful of scientists, including two at the National Institutes of Health who were sufficiently impressed that they joined a Nobel laureate in patenting a cannabis molecule. Courtney hands a copy of their U.S. Patent 6630507 to occupants of the chair, typically midway through a jargon-rich spiel that sometimes hits the patient right in the wheelhouse and sometimes goes whizzing overhead.
"I have no idea what he's talking about," said the auto mechanic who was in the chair a few minutes earlier, seeking relief for a broken vertebra and a bum knee. "Every once in a while he says something comprehensible."
But now, with no appointment and no right arm, someone was way ahead of him. "The last time we talked you said you had a source for the high-CBD material down by San Diego," the one-armed man began. He was dressed like a workingman but used the chemists' shorthand for cannabidiol, the most promising healing molecule, yet in most of the marijuana bought and sold these days, also the most elusive. CBD tends to show up least in plant strains that are richest in THC, the molecule that produces marijuana's high.
Courtney listened to the man, attentive yet guarded, the standard posture of a licensed medical practitioner operating on the far edge of the frontier where law, medicine and cannabis meet. It is a place in which he is used to being pretty much alone, and after a few minutes, Courtney sat upright and looked his patient in the eye.
"Are you wearing a wire?" the doctor asked.
'The basis of health'
Five years ago, while still a regular physician, Courtney was as spooked as most doctors about pot. Then he came across an article in the December 2004 issue of Scientific American. It changed his life. The article highlighted a molecule in cannabis that could do something he had never seen before: send signals not only into a nerve cell, but also back out again.
The finding reversed 20 years of his understanding of how neurotransmitters work. One-way traffic was the basis for inflammation: Immune cells receive endless messages to get cracking, none to calm down. Continuous attacking can inflame otherwise healthy tissue. Two-way communication makes possible a feedback loop, encouraging a modulation, the promise of which swept over the Michigan-born microbiology major with the force of religion. "My God," he said. "It's the basis of health."
Courtney keeps a framed graphic from the article on his desk. It stands beside copies of "Non-psychotropic plant cannabinoids: new therapeutic opportunities from an ancient herb," from Trends in Pharmacological Sciences -- and of course U.S. patent 6630507.
Among the three NIH scientists awarded the 2003 patent was the late Julius Axelrod, who won a share of the Nobel for nerve research that laid the groundwork for Prozac. "It took us a while to appreciate what was going on here," said Aidan Hampson, another of the patent holders, now a scientific review officer at NIH. "And it turns out cannabinoids had not been appreciated before, but they were strong antioxidants. The idea of a panacea," he added, however, "is just crazy."
Courtney feels differently, of course, but assessing the merits behind his enthusiasm is a difficult task. He has bona fide medical credentials and an evident passion to heal. But his approach is grounded in the counterculture ethos of Mendocino County, a coastal forestland populated since the 1960s by "new settlers" who rejected the establishment of two generations ago, and have since been in front on some things -- organic farming, for instance.
So when Courtney, excited by the ancient pedigree of cannabis, says "there are 34 million years of research in that plant," he might sound like one of your stoner friends. On the other hand, his Web site, http://leavesofgrass.info/, links to an assortment of establishment scientists, including the International Cannabinoid Research Society, which brings together hundreds of mainstream researchers in its annual meeting. One year, his domestic partner, Kristen Peskuski, summarized her return to near-full health -- from debilitating lupus, interstitial cystitis, rheumatoid arthritis and 40 medications a day -- after juicing fresh pot leaves over a 30-month period. Clinical tests documented the remission.
"Look at the people I'm rubbing elbows with -- Abbott, Smith, Merck," Courtney said, flipping through an ICRS program, thick as a phone book. "They know this is the future of medicine, without side effects."
Attention in scientific circles is, in fact, way up. "The amount of research published is growing algorithmically," said Allyn Howlett, a professor of physiology and pharmacology at Wake Forest University and ICRS president. Howlett has concerns about Courtney's approach. While he promotes marijuana as a good-for-you vegetable, like spinach, she regards "folk medicine" as backward and believes promising a spectrum of benefits is akin to peddling snake oil. Howlett pointed out that the pharmaceutical industry was created to standardize dosages, and the FDA to protect the consumer.
Quietly, one pharmaceutical firm has proceeded to FDA trials with a cannabinoid product. GW Pharmaceuticals, a British company, years ago bought the marijuana seed stock from a pair of Northern California botany enthusiasts who had decamped to Amsterdam, where it was safer to grow such things. After reading a GW report on a plant extremely high in CBD, Courtney for a while considered it the Grail, and looked high and low in Northern California. But in vain.
"What has happened is, almost all strains available in America through the black market are THC concentrates," said Ethan Russo, a Seattle area physician who is senior medical adviser to GW. "The CBD in almost all cases has been bred out. The reason is cannabis in this country has been cultivated for its intoxicating effect."
The company has produced an oral spray, called Sativex, approved in Canada for treatment of pain associated with multiple sclerosis and is pending in the U.K. and Spain for spasticity in MS. It has completed Phase II clinical trials in the FDA approval process as a treatment for cancer pain. The final trial awaits.
"It's going to be a few years yet," said Russo, who in the mid-'90s left his neurology practice in Montana, concerned by the toxic side effects of medicines he was prescribing. He returned from a sabbatical to Peru convinced that marijuana holds the greatest potential among medicinal plants.
"There's a tendency to discount claims when something appears to be good for everything, but there's a reason this is the case," he said. "CBD works on receptors, and as it turns out, we have cannabinoids in our bodies, endogenous cannabinoids, that turn out to be very effective at regulating immune functions, nerve functions, bone functions."
Hampson, of the NIH, likened the discovery of cannabinoids inside the body to "the opiate-endorphin story from 25 to 30 years ago. Before that, no one knew how heroin and morphine worked until they found these compounds in the brain, endorphins, and they used the same system. What were they for? To repress pain during exercise, et cetera."
Russo: "The endogenous cannabinoid system acts as a modulator in fine-tuning a lot of these systems, and if something is deranged biochemically in a person's body, it may well be that a cannabinoid system can bring things back into balance."
Stigma and Red Tape
Whatever potential may lurk in pot -- and most medicines start with a plant -- all agree that what Howlett called "the stigma associated with marijuana" presents powerful discouragement to scientists and firms. States may normalize access to marijuana, but the supremacy clause gives primacy to federal law that lists marijuana on Schedule 1 of the Controlled Substances Act, the tier reserved for drugs with "no currently accepted medical use."
"As far as the pharmaceutical industry goes, anything that has a controlled substance, they won't touch with a ten-foot pole," Hampson said.
Simply acquiring laboratory marijuana requires permission from an alphabet soup of agencies, including the Drug Enforcement Administration, which is famously hardheaded on the matter. It was, in fact, a sidelong mention of the DEA that cued Courtney to ask his patient about a wire. The agency must grant permission to import the device the one-armed man proposed to bring from Holland, a cannabis analyzer that might tell CBD enthusiasts exactly what they have in a particular plant.
This is a point of immense frustration in the gargantuan, perhaps $15 billion underground economy that flows from marijuana in California: No one knows for certain what they're buying. "I can't breed analytically," said Jim Hill, a pot farmer in Mendocino's Potter Valley. "I can only go by patient anecdote: 'Yeah, that really worked for me.' I can't go by graph paper."
After the DEA raided Hill's operation last October, he immediately replanted, emphatic that it was his right to supply dispensaries legally organized under state law as a "collective." Favorable court rulings have both emboldened and, in spots, professionalized California's marijuana industry. At Oakland's Harborside Health Center, pot is sold not by dealers but from a clean, white building where doors open by fingerprint scans, cameras monitor every corner, and pot brownies come in "childproof" wrappers.
"We're trying to medicalize down to the finest detail," chief operating officer Andrew DeAngelo said.
A few blocks away, the Steep Hill Medical Collective invested in a gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer in hopes of learning precisely what's in each pound of Grand Daddy and Purple Kush. In one room recently, a lab tech in a white coat bent over a console, while in another, two entrepreneurs mulled the lay of the land.
"You've got a movement that's turning into an industry," said Addison DeMoura, a Steep Hill owner.
A man in a Panama hat nodded agreement. Sixties activist Fred Gardner edits O'Shaughnessy's, a quarterly devoted to medical marijuana and named for the physician who brought cannabis to the attention of European medicos. "I think people owe it to the industry, owe it to the people, to do something honestly medical," Gardner said. "And CBD is honestly medical."
DeMoura could see it. "Twenty years ago it was just cannabis," he said. "The bridge to legalization is medical marijuana. I believe the bridge from medical marijuana to real science will be CBDs."
Meanwhile, two hours up Highway 101, William Courtney toiled in the laboratory that is Mendocino County. Maybe nowhere else in the country could a pot doc advise growing 40 plants -- enough for one juicing each day on the 45-day cycle required of the auto-flowering strain. Not only is it possible here, but a striking number of patients truly do not want to get high.
"I'm a mediator, so I don't want any psycho-activity," said a yoga enthusiast.
"I have two tokes and I pass out. It's unbearable," said the one-armed man.
Office hours over, Courtney climbed into his pickup, flicked on the radar detector intended to minimize encounters with the police, and steered over the switchbacks of the coast range toward home. His father was in from Michigan, watching the surf pound the rocks below the picture window and playing with his granddaughter, born 14 months earlier to Kristen, whose insides at one point were so bad off a doctor warned she would never bear children.
"Irv?" she called from the kitchen counter cluttered with carrots, pears, apples and Pineapple Thai. "You want a glass of juice?"
The old man looked up from the sea. "Sure," he said.

EAT YOUR CANNABIS
Eating Cannabis as Medicine
By Owen Smith
In the last article I explored some of the many cannabis products emerging from the inventive and inspired medical cannabis community. The collective ingenuity of cannabis focused organizations continues to improve this vital health service for terminally ill patients. Clubs like the CBC of C in Victoria represent over a decade of the pooled skills and resources needed to competently manage a high quality, affordable selection of cannabis products. With an ever increasing number of people finding relief from this medicine, it is equally important to provide education on how to best utilize it.
As discussed in detail in previous articles, Health Canada’s MMAR program has continued to fail in the task of providing a sufficient supply of diverse, high quality, affordable cannabis medicines to those in need, and forcing their patients to smoke or eat raw plant material. Recent proposed changes to the regulations did not include the refinement of raw cannabis into any form, regardless of the health benefits attributed to these alternatives.
Cannabis treats such a wide variety of conditions that a single method of treatment isn’t always suitable. Smoking cannabis is short lasting and wasteful, as well as exposing patients to potential harms that come with inhaling burnt plant matter (vaporizing helps to avert these health concerns, also). Eating cannabis is essential for individuals who cannot smoke due to compromised lungs or who cannot afford to buy the buds due to black market prices driven up by the risks associated with prohibition. Eating is effective over a longer period of time and uses ordinarily wasted material, such as stalk and leaf, and reduces costs. Topical application can assist patients for whom smoking and eating cannabis are not feasible options as “the top side of cannabis leaves are coated with thousands of microscopic thorns, and these sometimes cause minor intestinal irritation, even after grinding.”[i] Patients who have no desire to experience full body effects from taking cannabis internally can choose to localize their relief by applying cannabis through the skin. The fat soluble cannabinoids, soaked in vegetable oil, create a simple and effective lotion.
MMAR applicants for whom smoking is inappropriate are not given adequate information on how to properly prepare and use cannabis medicinally. This leads to unnecessary harms for patients learning unhealthy practices from recreational smokers, like how make overly strong edibles. By utilizing the simple techniques and proportions detailed in “the official CBC of C recipe book” online, the cannabinoid rich trichomes can be refined into a plethora of edible and topical products specific to the needs of each patient.
Recently, The Greenline Academy in Kelowna has stepped up to teach MMAR applicants how to navigate the government system, providing “information on the legal possession, consumption and production of medical marijuana though seminars, consulting and courses.”[ii] Health care professionals can now learn about the medical properties of cannabis through the Canadian Consortium for the Investigation of Cannabinoids that offers free accredited online courses through McGill University. Hempology has been broadcasting a free online non-credit lecture series from the University of Victoria for four years, covering a vast spectrum of related topics.
For over a decade, cannabis clubs/dispensaries in Canada have been independently rising to meet the needs of the sick and vulnerable in their communities. The recently formed Canadian Association of Medical Cannabis Dispensaries aims to create “a high standard of care through education, research and the promotion of best practices”[iii]. This co-ordination will help to incorporate the vast knowledge of dispensary owners, and improve the overall health care services they provide.
Among the primary advantages to being a member of a medical cannabis club, is access to a variety of strains distinguished on the scale between dominant sativa and indica varieties. While most people are made aware of this distinction in the cannabis they smoke, few are taught to know this division in the edible product selection. At the CBC of C we make a range of edible products that offer effects on a similar scale from sativa (day) to indica (night). We do this by infusing different parts of the plant into our vegetable oils.
Every medical cannabis user should have the option of either a stimulating experience suitable for daytime activity (sativa), or a sedating experience better for bedtime (indica). This difference is embedded in each plant’s diverse chemistry—its cannabinoid profile. Sativa plants are commonly high in THC and CBN (formed by degenerating THC) and low in CBD; Indica plants can be high in THC but with a higher concentration of CBD. THC is the most commonly found cannabinoid and its action produces the psychoactive “high” as well as being analgesic, anti-spasmodic, anti-tremor, anti-inflammatory, appetite stimulant, anti-emetic[iv], and more. Cannabidiol (CBD) is the cannabinoid responsible for many of the plants relaxing effects—sedative, anxiolytic (anti-anxiety), anti-inflammatory, anti-convulsant, anti-psychotic, anti-oxidant, neuroprotective, and immunomodulatory.
When a new member is signing up at the CBC of C, they are warned that individuals with a history of heart conditions or anxiety should avoid sativa dominant cannabis because of the potential for increased heart rate, rapid breathing, and anxiety attacks. They are then advised on how to find the indica products that help to reduce the potential for an uncomfortable experience. A 2010 The Nature of Things episode with David Suzuki, titled “The Downside of Getting High” explores these problems, asserting that cannabis grown for recreational purposes is found to contain increasingly high levels of THC and little CBD. Opposed to this trend, cannabis dispensaries commonly encourage their growers to provide indica strains containing higher amounts of CBD and provide products made from the “leaves [that] usually contain a higher percentage of CBD than THC”.[v]
Ironically, doctors continue to prescribe synthetic THC without CBD under the names Marinol, Dronabinol, and Nabilone. With the recent introduction of Sativex, Bayer Pharmaceuticals has conceded to the medical community that “The CBD:THC formulation is believed to enhance the therapeutic benefits of THC while modulating the unwanted psychotropic and other THC-related side effects.”[vi] A new study by Jose A. S. Crippa and a team of Brazilian investigators confirms that symptoms of Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) can be reduced by treatment with CBD. “These results suggest that CBD reduces anxiety in SAD and that this is related to its effects on activity in limbic and paralimbic brain areas.”[vii]
These findings reinforce the need for a refined method of selecting cannabis that takes into account patients who have pre-existing mental health or heart conditions. The kind of uncomfortable experiences that sometimes accompany the smoking of recreational cannabis can be reduced by giving patients the option to choose a CBD rich bud, massage oil, or cookie.
As medical cannabis expertise expands, more interesting alternatives to smoking emerge. Medical Marijuana Inc. is a California company intent on removing the euphoria and “high” feeling with a brand of “THC Free [Cannabinoid] water which has all of the additional 500 plus natural benefits less THC”. The “beverages will be marketed throughout similar distribution channels as bottled drinking water [...] so as to be readily available to the general populace in the next few months.”[viii]
As politicians pander pothead cliches, science is advancing the discourse with this plant medicine into new and unexpected places. A United States Health Department Patent states “one CBD benefit is to reduce DNA damage due to free radical species, anti-aging of neural, CNS, COPD, and other cellular targets.”[ix] In studies of neurodegeneration related to Parkinson’s disease “data indicated that these neuroprotective effects might be due, among others, to the antioxidant properties of certain plant-derived cannabinoids”[x]. In preliminary trials it is established that “CBD may be effective, safe and well tolerated for the treatment of the psychosis in PD.”[xi]
ProjectCBD.org is a non profit educational service dedicated to promoting and publicizing research into the medical utility of CBD and other components of the cannabis plant. Keep track of the exciting discoveries on the cutting edge of medical science in their online CBDiary.
While there are close to seventy other cannabinoids that are known to have therapeutic effects, CBD is quickly becoming the second (to THC) most commonly considered compound in the plant. These studies confirm what medical cannabis clubs have long purported to be the benefits of whole plant cannabis medicine. By continuing to provide education and access to this dynamic, and much needed medicine, the cannabis movement is riding a scientific high into more defined and diverse horizons.

THOSE WONDERFUL CBD's
CBD & Marijuana
by Administrator 12 Mar, 2012
CBD, three letters you’ve probably seen thrown around when reading about medical marijuana. What is CBD and what does it stand for? CBD, or Cannabidiol is a chemical compound found in the Cannabis plant. Unlike THC, CBD does not produce any psychoactive effects. Instead, it is part of the Cannabis plant that holds the highest medicinal value. Research has found it to be effective for treating inflammation, pain, anxiety and spasms associated with multiple sclerosis. As the research on Marijuana’s medicinal properties develop, CBD is becoming a major focus of scientists, researchers and doctors alike. The research of CBD did not get much attention until the late 90s. Even so, CBD rich strains were used for medicinal purposes dating back to the 1800′s. It was reported that Queen Victoria used CBD-rich cannabis to relieve pain from menstrual cramps. Over the years, research has found that breeding for maximum THC has all but eliminated CBD in the cannabis plant. This makes sense as consumers were more interested in the psychoactive effects versus medicinal value. As medical marijuana becomes more mainstream, the need for strains rich in CBD properties has grown. Through careful genetic selection and selective breeding practices, researches are now able to grow CBD rich cannabis strains that hold extremely high medicinal value.
CBD and Cancer
Search the internet for “marijuana cures cancer” and you’ll find numerous studies and articles on the positive correlation on cannabis and the reduction of cancer cells among users. Is it true? Can cannabis cure or stop cancer cells? It seems the answer is yes. According to projectcbd.org, doctors at the California Pacific Medical Center Research institute have discovered that CBD is a very potent inhibitor of cancer. Documented, medical research has proven that CBD inhibits the ID-1 protein gene which is a major conductor of cancer cells. (Article – http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18025276). CBD has been proven to slow and/or stop the metastasis in patients suffering from other forms of cancer.

YES! we are STILL Juicing!
So, we finished our 40 day raw juice challenge. And, some people have asked me if we have gone past the 40 days and continued juicing?
YES! We both have continued juicing EVERYDAY!
I find that 60 + days into continual raw cannabis juicing, WE DON'T MISS A DAY.
Remember, it only takes 21 days to change a bad habit, or get use to a new one!
When I start to feel sick, I drink extra juice.
I feel my body aching from inflammations and or pain, I drink more juice to relief those symptoms.
Does it take a lot of time and energy to make everyday?
Yes, it can take some extra time, and making sure you have fresh vegetables and fruits to juice is also important. But when FIVE minutes after drinking a glass, you can start to feel its warming and calming benefits. Not 30-40 minutes after taking a pill!
What is the biggest challenge to juice raw cannabis everyday?
Keeping a fresh and available stock of leaves. I have so many people who would love to start this raw cannabis juicing program. BUT!! they don't have any, let alone a steady access to the raw leaves. And no, most California medicinal marijuana dispensaries, are not HIP enough to carry and sell the raw materials that patients are desperately looking for. Now, there is hope that soon in our future there will be access to these vitals leaves for juicing purposes. Some dispensaries in Northern California have joined a raw cannabis juice study with over 1000 patients to date. Each patient is given a Free juicer, as well as the leaves needed for their own personal juicing program.
My suggestion to those Medicinal Marijuana patients who are interested in trying raw cannabis juicing is to ask someone you may know who helps patients with growing there medicine. More often then not, people throw away excess shade (big fan leaves) that contains the high CBD's that relieves symptoms.
With the 2012 outdoor grow season still upon us, there will be plenty of outdoor gardens that will have plenty of leaves to share, just please ask those friends first! : )
Grow your own leaves! Dr. Wm. Courtney of Mendocino Co. Ca. states that many patients use auto-flowing plants that they grow inside under one 400 watt bulb system. Growing 40 plants to start. Then taking one plant per day, for raw juicing purposes.
good luck everyone!

For those of you who still have any doubts as to the miraculous healing powers of cannabis and THC Oil or do not believe that there is an ongoing international effort dead set on keeping this free and 100% organic medicine, along with all organic foods, supplements, and natural medicines from a diseased and dying global population... I am about to BLOW YOUR MINDS......
On October 7, 2003 The United States Government as represented by the Department of Health and Human Services was granted a U.S. Patent (#6630507) on any and all uses and applications of: Cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants.
In other words, THE GOVERNMENT ALREADY OWNS THE ORGANIC THC OIL BY FORCE... and now THEY OWN THE SYNTHETIC THC OIL BY PATENT... along with any and all combinations of the beneficial compounds found in cannabinoids. As you read through this document you will discover beyond any doubt whatsoever that cannabis has a tremendous variety of medicinal values and applications specific and provable enough to be granted a U.S. Patent, yet the Judicial Branch of our government continues to classify cannabis as a Schedule 1 Controlled Substance
How can they possibly say that cannabis has no medicinal qualities while at the same time they hold a patent that describes in great detail so many of the proven medicinal qualities that actually DO exist in cannabis?
There has been an ongoing effort to eliminate this ridiculous classification by a wide variety of activists and organizations for decades now but to date... the government holds all the cards and rules with a closed mind and an iron fist.
The Abstract of the patent reads as follows:
Cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant properties, unrelated to NMDA receptor antagonism.
http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=nmda+receptors&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8
(The NMDA receptor is one of two kinds of receptors activated by glutimates).
http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=nmda+receptors&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8
(The NMDA receptor is one of two kinds of receptors activated by glutimates).
This new found property makes cannabinoids useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of a wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, such as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and auto-immune diseases. The cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and HIV dementia.
Nonpsychoactive cannabinoids, such as cannabidoil (mis-spelled in document - should read cannabidiol), are particularly advantageous to use because they avoid toxicity that is encountered with psychoactive cannabinoids at high doses useful in the method of the present invention. A particular disclosed class of cannbinoids useful as neuroprotective antioxidants is formula (1) wherein the R group is independently selected from the group consisting of H, CH.sub3, and COCH.sub3. ##STR1##
In other words, it is useful to separate the natural components and use higher concentrations of the beneficial compounds found in cannabis (the R group) to act as antioxidants and neuroprotectants within the human body. Cannabidiol is designed and being engineered to provide all the benefits of organic cannabis without the psychoactive "high" associated with the drug. This will allow them to continue patenting their product while demonizing cannabis in the media and courts and keeping this pure and natural medicine illegal and unavailable.
Be sure to take the time to scroll down and read through this patent and you will discover what a miracle plant cannabis really is. You will be asking yourself... "What can't it do?" as application after application is described in great detail about the medicinal properties and natural treatment potentials of cannabis. Ask yourselves "Why are multinational corporations allowed to continually market dangerous and untested poisons, toxins and industrial waste products described as food additives and incorporate them into our processed food supply while you and I face arrest and incarceration for simply growing and selling organic foods and medicines?"
I have been healing people and their pets for over two years now using organic nutrients combined with THC Oil and the results are miraculous. Screw the FDA... CANNABIS CURES CANCER!
